Biomolecular Science

Biomolecular science is a discipline within the life sciences that focuses on cellular processes at the molecular level. It involves the analysis, transformation and manipulation of molecules, and the molecular interpretation of the world around us.

Biomolecules play indispensable roles in several life processes, including disease development, making the accurate detection of biomolecules critical to disease diagnosis and therapy. Biomolecular scientists have been responsible for developing non-invasive cancer diagnosis, rapid pathogen detection, novel medicines, and new ways to produce cheap renewable energy. This shows that those with expertise in biomolecular science are critical to our future development.

Biomolecular science helps us understand how molecules form, interact and influence the structure and function of biological systems. Through structured research, theoretical and practical problems can be solved and concepts presented. Much of biomolecular science is quantitative, and recent work has been done at its interface with computer science in bioinformatics and computational biology.

Similar disciplines in life sciences

Other areas of biology are increasingly intersecting with biomolecular science, focusing on molecules in evolutionary biology such as population genetics and phylogenetics (either directly by studying interactions in their own right such as in cell biology and developmental biology, or indirectly where molecular techniques are used to infer historical attributes of populations or species).

There are a number of other disciplines within the life sciences that are broadly defined by the scale at which study takes place and the study methods that are used. Examples include:

  • Biochemistry – The study of the fundamental chemistry of life, focusing on the chemical processes within and related to living organisms.
  • Molecular biology – The study of the structure and function of macromolecules essential to life.
  • Cellular biology – The study of the structures and functions of cells as the basic unit of life.
  • Biotechnology – The use of organisms and biological techniques to produce drugs and food.
  • Genomics – The field concerned with the structure, function, evolution and mapping of genomes.
  • Proteomics – The large-scale study of proteomes (sets of proteins produced in an organism, system, or biological context) and their interactions with each other.
  • Pharmaceutical chemistry – The identification and synthesis of new chemical entities and the study of their structure-activity relationships.
