High Pressure Homogenisation

High pressure homogenisation is a mechanical process which involves forcing fluid through a narrow homogenising nozzle at high pressure (up to 400 MPa). The liquid is subjected to very high shear stress which causes the formation of fine emulsion droplets. The smaller the nozzle aperture and the higher the pressure, the smaller the droplets that are produced, with the aim being to reduce particles and droplets from micron to nanometer sizes.

The Avestin Emulsiflex range of high pressure homogenisers are ideal for cell rupture (cell lysis), ultrafine emulsions, nanoparticles, and homogeneous liposomes. Apart from the Biomolecular Sciences Emulsiflex homogenisers have applications in the pharmaceutical, cosmetic and food industries. In the dairy industry it enhances texture and mouth feel by generating nano-emulsions which allows the use of less fat without a compromise in taste, meaning healthier food choices.

ATA Scientific provides an excellent range of high pressure homogenisers including the Avestin Emulsiflex C3, designed for cell rupture and lab scale production of nanoparticles and microemulsions. Its dynamic homogenising valve maintains a constant pressure and produces extremely uniform micro emulsions, with narrow nanoparticle size distribution. With a wide pressure range between 500 and 30,000 psi, it allows for many materials to be efficiently processed in a single pass, giving it the potential to be scaled up to an integrated continuous process.

All Emulsiflex homogenisers feature Avestin’s easy to clean design, with no O rings or gaskets for cross contamination. Steam in place (SIP) sterilisable, these homogenisers are ideal for clean room and GMP manufacturing.
