The KRUSS Tensiio Force tensiometer is a new generation, universal tensiometer for liquid and solid surfaces. Designed to be modular it offers intuitive operation with a touch display and additional options that can be tailored to suit future changing laboratory needs.

The high-resolution force sensor provides high precision and is capable of measuring low interfacial tensions and even wetting forces at single fibers. The positioning system for the sample stage has the largest dynamic range to date in the segment of tensiometers based on force measurement. To save time before and during each measurement, the sample stage of Tensíío moves particularly fast while preventing premature sample contact using preprogrammed standard positions. The sample stage can also move very slowly, minimising any vibration when studying high viscosity liquids.

Measurement preparation is simple thanks to the spacious, easily accessible sample chamber and the built-in stirrer and integrated temperature control up to 300 °C. Additional options expand the possibilities for analyses of solid surfaces. An optional ioniser helps to remove interfering static charges while the optional high-resolution camera records what happens at the contact area at the liquid surface. It can measure the adhesion between a drop and a solid surface while analysing the drop optically.

ADVANCE software offers several different approaches of analysing surface and interfacial tension, each one carried out automatically using prepared and adaptable programs. Users can also create their own methods using the flexible and intuitive automation programming toolbox.

What measurement methods does the Tensiio support?

The Tensiio supports 16+ distinct analytical methods. These include the Du Nouy ring method and Wilhelmy plate/rod method for surface and interfacial tension, critical micelle concentration (CMC) determination, advancing and receding contact angle measurement, surface free energy calculation of solids, capillary force measurement on porous materials, liquid and solid density via buoyancy and immersion, sedimentation speed analysis, and drop pull-off adhesion testing.

How precise is the Tensiio’s force sensor and what measurement range does it cover?

The Tensiio uses a high-resolution force sensor capable of measuring from 1 to 2,000 mN/m. Its wide dynamic range allows it to measure both low interfacial tensions in liquid-liquid systems and the small wetting forces at single fibres — a capability that standard tensiometers in its class do not typically offer.

What temperature range can the Tensiio measure samples?

The Tensiio covers a measurement temperature range of -15°C to 300°C. Integrated temperature control operates between -15°C and 135°C, with the extended upper range available through optional accessories. The instrument includes a built-in stirrer with integrated temperature control, and sample temperature is recorded as a measurable result alongside surface chemistry data.

How does the Tensiio handle critical micelle concentration (CMC) measurement?

The Tensiio, when used with KRUSS ADVANCE software and the optional Micro Dispenser unit, automates CMC measurement by generating a concentration series without manual intervention. The software automatically calculates CMC parameters including excess concentration and molecular surface area, and can export results unattended.

Can the Tensiio measure the wettability of solids, fibres, and powders?

Yes. Beyond liquid surface tension, the Tensiio measures wetting behaviour on solid surfaces, fibres, and powders using the Wilhelmy method. It can determine contact angles on solid flat samples, measure wetting forces at single carbon fibres, calculate surface free energy components (polar and dispersive), and quantify capillary absorption forces on porous materials such as textile fabrics or pharmaceutical tablets.

What industries and applications is the Tensiio designed for?

The Tensiio is used across surfactant and emulsifier development, pharmaceutical wetting analysis, paint and varnish formulation, coating chemistry, cosmetic product development, textile and fibre processing, fibre-reinforced polymer manufacturing, battery electrode wetting, oil field enhanced recovery (EOR), pesticide formulation, and wastewater treatment monitoring.
