The Malvern Spraytec system is specifically designed for spray characterisation. It provides real-time size distribution of spray droplets and aerosols.

The Spraytec uses the technique of laser diffraction. A laser beam passes through the spray which scatters the light creating a scattering pattern. The optics measure the angles and intensity of the scattered light and this is used to calculate the droplet size distribution.

The Spraytec system is made up of a laser module, a detector module and an optical bench to mount and align the laser and detector modules.

The Spraytec software controls the measurement process and analyses the light scattering data to calculate spray size distributions.The results are displayed as a ‘size history’ trend plot showing droplet size changes over time. Measuring parameters can be incorporated into Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs).

Orally inhaled and nasal drug products
Formulations can be screened rapidly for the desired spray properties reducing development times and improving drug delivery efficacy.

Routine atomizer characterisation
Spraytec’s rugged design and multiple scattering analysis ensures measurements can be made at high concentrations directly within a spray plume. This provides a greater understanding of the environmental impact of spraying in coatings or agrochemical applications.

Automotive applications
Spraytec can be used to measure the fluctuations in droplet size observed during rapid firing of automotive fuel injector systems and provide data related to combustion efficiency.

Aerosol Positioning Accessory

This reproducibly positions aerosol cans to eliminate source variability.

Spraytec

Monash University, Department of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering has installed their Malvern Panalytical Spraytec which uses laser diffraction for the measurement of the size of spray droplets and spray particles. The research group will use the Spraytec to study spray atomisation and aerosol formation in applications such as fuel injection systems (for internal combustion engines, gas turbines and rockets) and pharmaceutical sprays such as metered dose inhalers, nebulisers other medical devices.

The company will use the Spraytec in the development of unique patented spray nozzles and wash down solutions such as tank cleaning nozzles, air guns, spray guns and check valves.

The Woolcock Institute has installed two new Malvern laser diffraction systems to be used for pharmaceutical particulate characterisation. The new Spraytec enables real time particle size distributions for sprays and aerosols, while the latest Mastersizer 3000 offers highest resolution for wet and dry sample measurements.
