Product Overview

Archimedes is a unique benchtop instrument which detects and counts individual particles within a formulation (50nm – 5µm) by means of Resonant Mass Measurement (RMM). This novel approach gives accurate and reproducible measurements of particle mass, concentration, and size while also providing information on sample viscosity, polydispersity and density.

This high perfomance system is driven by MEMS (Micro Electro-Mechanical Systems) sensor technology.When a particle flows through the fluidic channel, it changes the resonating frequency of the cantilever which indicates the size and concentration each particle.

RMM allows the highly sensitive and reproducible measurement of aggregates, one by one. The compact sensor fluidics require low sample volumes and can accommodate native concentrations and viscosities without dilution.

Unlike alternative methods Archimedes can clearly distinguish between positively and negatively buoyant particles. This is a key application that allows the user to detect, quantify and characterise contaminating material in biopharmaceutical formulations to prevent immunogenic effects which may compromise drug safety and efficacy. In this way, silicone oil droplets can quickly be distinguished from protein aggregates found in prefilled syringes.

Simplicity of operation and maintenance, together with intuitive software, provides a powerful tool for particle characterisation.
