GeoPyc, a Micromeritics Technology, is an Envelope Density Analyser that rapidly measures the envelope density of porous objects of irregular size and shape. Envelope density or bulk density is the mass of an object divided by its volume where the volume includes that of its pores and small cavities. Envelope density information is useful in characterising catalysts, structural foams, insulators, ceramics, powder metallurgy objects, and other manufactured goods.

GeoPyc follows a unique displacement measurement technique that uses a quasi-fluid called DryFlo which is composed of small, rigid spheres having a high degree of flow-ability. The sample is placed in a bed of Dry Flo which is agitated and gently consolidated about the sample. The GeoPyc collects the displacement data, performs the calculations, and displays or prints the results. The unit also reports percentage porosity and specific pore volume when absolute density information (density excluding pore and small cavity volume obtained from a Micromeritics Accu-Pyc helium pycnometer) is entered.

What is the GeoPyc used for?

The GeoPyc measures the envelope volume and density of solid materials without using liquids. It is ideal for powders, granules, pellets, tablets, irregularly shaped objects, and fragile materials.

What is envelope density?

Envelope density is the mass of a material divided by its total external volume, including surface pores and irregularities, but excluding spaces between separate particles.

How does the GeoPyc work?

The GeoPyc uses a dry displacement method with specially engineered solid media called DryFlo®. The media conforms around the sample, allowing accurate determination of envelope volume without damaging the material.

What are the advantages of dry displacement over liquid displacement?

Dry displacement eliminates issues such as sample wetting, swelling, dissolution, contamination, or drying requirements, making it suitable for sensitive materials.

While the GeoPyc measures envelope volume and density, gas pycnometers such as the AccuPyc measure skeletal volume and density. Together, these measurements can be used to calculate porosity.
