The KRUSS DSA25 Drop Shape Analyser is an easy-to-use, reliable instrument for measuring contact angle. From a simple wetting test to the accurate measurement of surface free energy (SFE), the robust instrument provides flexible options for analysing wetting and adhesion on solid surfaces. Its rapid, manual sample positioning makes the DSA25 outstandingly suitable for occasional wetting measurements with changing tasks and sample types.

Surface free energy in seconds
The Liquid Needle is a novel dosing method that offers a fast and reproducible way of placing drops on solid surfaces with minimum kinetic energy using a very thin jet of liquid instead of a solid needle. The Liquid Needle dosing technology performs rapid one-click measurements of the surface free energy (SFE) based on contact angles of two liquids. The additional syringe dosing unit can be used to add data for a third liquid to consolidate the SFE result or to measure the surface tension (SFT) of a liquid.

Reliable drop shape analysis thanks to high imaging quality
A high-resolution camera combined with a high-quality zoom lens ensure an accurate determination of the drop with optimal size which leads to a precisely measured contact angle or surface tension (SFT). The optional tilting table allows the analysis of (super-) hydrophobic and self-cleaning surfaces automatically by means of the contact angle and roll-off angle.

Maximum repeatability and comprehensive adhesion analysis
The ADVANCE software supports the Liquid Needle in order to carry out automated SFE measurements within seconds. The easy-to-create automation programs can also be used to design a standard procedure for sample analysis to maximise repeatability of measurements. Optional software tools for data analysis combine SFE and SFT data in order to assess the adhesion and calculate other parameters of the solid/liquid contact.

What is drop shape analysis used for?

Drop shape analysis is used to measure how liquids interact with solid surfaces. The DSA25 determines contact angles, surface tension, liquid-liquid interfacial tension, and surface free energy (SFE). Applications include

How does a drop shape analyser work?

The DSA25 uses a high-resolution camera combined with a high-quality zoom lens to precisely capture the shape of liquid droplets on surfaces. Software then calculates contact angles, surface tension, and other surface properties from the droplet shape.

What is contact angle measurement?

Contact angle measurement determines the angle at which a liquid droplet meets a solid surface, indicating the wettability of that surface. The DSA25 captures static contact angles as well as advancing and receding angles to assess coating and adhesive performance.

How do you measure surface tension?

The DSA25 measures liquid surface tension using pendant drops or constrained sessile drops, with software-controlled dosing of up to 3 test liquids.

Can drop shape analysis measure dynamic contact angles?

Yes. The DSA25 measures both static contact angles and dynamic angles including advancing and receding contact angles, which are critical for assessing coatings and adhesives.

What is surface free energy?

Surface free energy (SFE) is calculated from contact angle measurements using multiple test liquids and standard thermodynamic models. The DSA25 calculates SFE using the Liquid Needle dosing method for rapid analysis. Kruss Liquid Needle is a unique, patented dosing technology that uses a high-pressure, thin jet of liquid to form droplets instead of a traditional solid needle, allowing extremely fast (under 0.1s), non-contact, and highly reproducible dosing.

What sample types can be analysed with the DSA25?

The DSA25 can analyse solid surfaces including plastics, glass, ceramics, and metals, across a temperature range of -30 degrees C to 400 degrees C. Humidity-controlled measurements are also supported.

How does drop shape analysis help in coating applications?

The DSA25 validates coating effectiveness per DIN 55660 and assesses surface activation from plasma, flame, and corona treatments. Contact angle measurements indicate how well coatings adhere to or repel a surface.

What is advancing and receding contact angle?

Advancing and receding contact angles are dynamic measurements that assess surface behaviour as a liquid front advances or recedes. These measurements can provided critical data and enhanced sensitivity for evaluating the performance of coatings and adhesives.

Can DSA measure interfacial tension?

Yes. The DSA25 measures liquid-liquid interfacial tension in addition to surface tension and contact angle.

What industries use drop shape analysis?

The DSA25 is used across electronics (wafer cleanliness), coatings and surface treatments, adhesives and bonding, and materials science (plastics, glass, ceramics, metals).

Can I have a demonstration or free trial of the DSA25 Drop Shape Analyser?

Yes, if a system is available. Contact us for a booking. We can arrange a personalised demo and test your samples within our lab facility in Sydney. Onsite free trials are also available. Contact us or complete a request a demo form to get started.

Illumination High power monochromatic LED
Dosing system upto 8 liquids, software controlled

The KRUSS DSA100 is a high-performance Drop Shape Analyser that delivers a range of benefits for wetting and adhesion analysis of solids and liquids particularly to characterise surfaces and surface coatings (wettability). The system is designed to be modular, from the basic unit for precise measurement of static and dynamic contact angle to the fully automatic expert instrument for serial measurement of surface free energy (SFE) of a solid sample and the surface tension of a liquid.

The high level of automation with easily programmable procedures ensures user-independent results for contact angle and surface tension. The DSA100 is widely used in both quality control and research and development because of its versatility in controlling thermal conditions, dosing solutions and intelligent software tools for analysing solid-liquid contact.

With up to three axes for sample positioning, the sample is moved quickly and reproducibly to the measuring positions. Measurement of the contact angle with up to 8 liquids ensures maximum accuracy when determining the SFE. Using a very thin jet of liquid instead of a solid needle, the novel dosing method called the Liquid Needle, delivers precisely controlled drops on solid surfaces with minimum kinetic energy, allowing the SFE to be determined quickly and reliably.

Precisely controlled temperature and humidity chambers help to provide modeling of real process conditions. Special sample tables optimise the investigation of wafers and ultrahydrophobic surfaces. High-tech solutions for optical components enable a time-saving, automatic image setup, and measurement of extremely fast wetting processes. They also allow measurements to be made on microscopically small samples.

Comprehensive analysis of solids and liquids
DSA100 measures the surface tension of liquids using the Pendant Drop method to provide a picture of the interface contact, which can be used to optimise the adhesion and long-term stability of coatings. Other solutions for measuring the liquid-liquid interfacial tension, for measurements at high pressures and for surface rheology make the DSA100 a universal instrument for interface research. The tilting table for the DSA100 enables users to analyse (super-) hydrophobic and self-cleaning surfaces automatically by means of the contact angle and roll-off angle.

ADVANCE – our intuitive software solution for your measurement tasks
The simple operation of the instrument goes hand-in-hand with the clear user guidance of our ADVANCE software. The relevant functions for each particular step are arranged in tiles which display all elements necessary in the context. By avoiding the use of menus and pop-ups, ADVANCE saves any unnecessary clicks and time-consuming searches for hidden elements. Software controlled automatic sequences provide high reproducibility and reduce the user’s influence on the results.
