Mastersizer 3000+

CSIRO in Canberra have installed their new Malvern Panalytical Mastersizer 3000+ Ultra particle size analyser, with both wet (Hydro LV) and dry (Aero S) dispersion units. Delivering accurate particle size distribution measurements from 10 nm to 3.5 mm, the system will enable the group to advance soil analyses and characterisation. The information gained will deepen understanding of the central role soil plays in our environment and the need for environmental monitoring to address current concerns over food, water and energy securities, land degradation and climate change.

3Flex Surface Area Analyser, Micromeritics technology

The University of Sydney, School of Chemistry recently installed their new Micromeritics 3Flex a high-performance gas adsorption analyser for measuring pore size, pore volume and surface area of powders and particulate materials. Standard methods or user-customised protocols can be used to characterise adsorbents, catalysts, zeolites, MOFs, APIs, excipients, and a wide variety of porous and non-porous materials. The group works on Advanced Catalytic Processes for Renewable Chemicals Manufacture.

Zetasizer

The Biologics Innovation Facility (BIF) has recently installed their new Malvern Panalytical Zetasizer Ultra, dynamic light scattering system. Located at the University of Technology Sydney, the BIF offers pilot-scale biomanufacturing capabilities for products like viral vector therapies, mRNA vaccines and lab-grown meat and alternative proteins.

The Zetasizer is a critical analytical instrument in biomanufacturing, primarily used for characterising nanoparticles, proteins, and molecular solutions to ensure product quality, safety, and stability.

Spraytec

Monash University, Department of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering has installed their Malvern Panalytical Spraytec which uses laser diffraction for the measurement of the size of spray droplets and spray particles. The research group will use the Spraytec to study spray atomisation and aerosol formation in applications such as fuel injection systems (for internal combustion engines, gas turbines and rockets) and pharmaceutical sprays such as metered dose inhalers, nebulisers other medical devices.

Mastersizer 3000+

HRL have installed their new Malvern Panalytical Mastersizer 3000+ Ultra particle size analyser. Delivering accurate particle size distribution measurements from 10 nm to 3.5 mm using a single optical measurement path, the system will enable precise control and optimisation of material properties and will help to enhance manufacturing processes.

HRL provides particle size analysis for a range of clients including in the ceramics, cosmetics, food, paint and pharmaceutical industries and for a range of emissions-monitoring situations.

Veolia

Zetasizer

Veolia has recently installed their new Malvern Panalytical Zetasizer Ultra, dynamic light scattering system. Veolia provides solutions that are both useful and practical for water, waste and energy management.

Zetasizer is used in water analysis to measure zeta potential and particle size, providing data to optimise treatment processes by controlling the charge on suspended particles to promote aggregation and settling. It can be used to quantify the stability of water suspensions, allowing for real-time monitoring and control of coagulant dosing in water treatment plants.

Morphologi

The Central Analytical Research Facility (CARF) at QUT has recently installed a variety of key characterisation technologies including Micromeritics 3Flex, Smart VacPrep, Malvern Panalytical Morphologi, Zetasizer Ultra and Mastersizer 3000+ Ultra. CARF offer services to staff, students, external researchers and commercial organisations, ranging from basic technical support to commercial research. The UNSW, Faculty of Medicine has installed their new Malvern Panalytical Zetasizer Pro, dynamic light scattering system. The Zetasizer delivers enhanced resolution, speed and ease-of-use for the measurement of particle and molecular size, particle charge and particle concentration. These capabilities are key to the group’s research that spans biomedical research to help solve complex and important health challenges like cancer, infectious disease, cardiovascular disease and mental health.

Micronisers pty ltd have installed their new Mastersizer 3000+ particle size analyser. Delivering accurate particle size distribution measurements from 10 nm to 3.5 mm using a single optical measurement path, the system will enable precise control and optimisation of material properties and will help to enhance manufacturing processes. Micronisers in conjunction with Australian universities and research organisations like CSIRO develops a range of additives/intermediates including ultrafine powders, (nano zinc oxide, zinc monoglycerolate and sodium benzoate), liquid suspensions and cosmetic oils.

The Department of Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry in Queensland has installed their new Thermo Scientific Phenom Pure G6 Desktop Scanning Electron Microscope. The group is working to enhance Australia’s agricultural industries and trade, and manage the threat of biosecurity risks to Australia for many high-risk animal and plant pests and diseases.

Lava Blue has installed their new Phenom XL G2 Desktop Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM) to support the development of a range of high purity materials for use in the manufacture of advanced batteries and other renewable energy technologies such as photovoltaic cells. Lava Blue use innovative technologies to manufacture high purity alumina powders for battery separators as well as other applications. The Phenom SEM will shine light on their R&D process, provide guidance in process control, and assist in QA/QC.

Australian-based company Alpha HPA has installed their new Phenom Pharos G2 Desktop Scanning Electron Microscope to support the production of high-purity aluminium products suitable for a wide range of high technology industries including technical ceramics, LED lighting, synthetic sapphire, semiconductors, specialty catalysts, Direct Lithium Extraction (DLE) technology and lithium-ion battery markets. Solvent extraction (SX) purification techniques coupled with unique, proprietary process chemistry deliver high purity aluminium oxides, hydroxides, nitrates and sulphates with a low carbon profile.

This biopharmaceutical company focused on developing its proprietary EDV™ nanocell platform for the targeted delivery of chemotherapeutics and functional nucleic acids in cancer. NanoSight Pro with NTA technology is ideally suited to study the size of these particles from early stage research through to candidate screening, formulation development and clinical batch monitoring whilst the concentration measurement allows for final dose determination.

The Engineering Analytical Facility (EAF) at the University of Sydney is a key hub providing researchers and students with access to state-of-the-art analytical instruments and technical expertise. To meet growing demand, the facility has expanded its capabilities with additional Phenom desktop SEMs in order to supercharge their user output! The EAF now operates two Phenom XL G2 systems, as well as a Phenom ProX system.

DSA Drop Shape Analyser

RMIT University, Food Research & Innovation Centre recently installed their new KRUSS DSA25, an easy-to-use, Drop Shape Analyser for determining the wettability of solids using contact angle as well as the surface tension of liquids. The KRUSS DSA25 will help stimulate the development of new high-value food and beverage products for the global marketplace.

MicroCal PEAQ ITC

University of Canterbury, New Zealand has installed their new Malvern Panalytical PEAQ ITC system. The group studies biomolecular interactions, central to understanding and finding new treatments for diseases, developing new products (e.g., bioplastics, 3D printed devices), understanding and protecting our environment, and developing and utilising new technologies (sensors, NMR drug detection, non-invasive scanning).

The University of Melbourne, School of Chemistry has installed their new Thermo Scientific Phenom ProX Desktop Scanning Electron Microscope. The group is working on uncovering new avenues for efficient light-to-chemical energy conversion, and for ultra-sensitive molecular (bio)sensing.

Phenom Pharos G2

Li-S Energy has recently installed their new Thermo Scientific Phenom XL G2 Argon-Compatible Desktop SEM. It allows SEM imaging and analysis within an argon filled glove box for safer sample preparation and SEM EDS analysis within the same workspace. This setup enables research on air-sensitive battery samples since it decreases the risk of sample degradation due to lithium oxidation. By eliminating the need to move the research sample from one instrument to another, users can retain sample integrity, and save time and resources.

Phenom Particle X series

Hysata has installed their new Thermo Scientific Phenom XL Desktop SEM. The company manufactures ultra-efficient electrolysers used to produce green hydrogen from renewable electricity and water. Based in Port Kembla, Australia, the company has developed a breakthrough “capillary-fed” technology that is approximately 20% more efficient than existing commercial systems.

Earth AI has installed their new Thermo Scientific Phenom XL Desktop SEM. The company Earth AI uses artificial intelligence and proprietary drilling technology to discover critical mineral deposits (such as copper, nickel, and gold) faster and cheaper than traditional mining methods. Using Nanoparticle Tracking Analysis NanoSight provides a fast and accurate way of looking at the behaviour of nanoparticles like extracellular vesicles within a biological medium. Malvern NanoSight NS300 provides high-resolution size distribution and concentration measurements for individual nanoparticles while a fluorescence mode allows differentiation of fluorescing particles.

Sanitarium Health Food Company has recently installed their new Malvern Zetasizer Pro. Still 100% Australian owned, the company which was founded in 1898 started making health foods from a small bakery in Melbourne. Sanitarium plans to use the Zetasizer to ensure plant-based foods are processed only as much as needed for optimal nutrition, taste, convenience and safety.

Supporting chocolate production and QC, it will provide a simple method for fast, reliable chocolate particle size analysis to produce a product with a consistent taste and mouthfeel. Fosterville Gold Mine

Mastersizer 3000+

Fosterville Gold Mine in Victoria in have installed their Mastersizer 3000E system. The ore is extracted from the underground gold mine and transported to the processing plant for crushing, grinding, flotation, bacterial oxidation, and carbon-in-leach (CIL) circuits. The MS3000 system will enable the plant to monitor particle size of the milled ore to help improve mineral separation and recovery rates.

Avestin Emulsiflex

The University of Queensland, department of chemical engineering, has installed their new Avestin Emulsiflex C5, an air-driven, high-pressure homogeniser that rapidly reduces particles and droplets from micron to nanometer sizes. COVID travel restrictions meant the installation took place online which further helps show the ease-of-use of the system.

The University of Newcastle has installed their new Malvern MPT-3 autotitrator with their Zetasizer Ultra, which is designed to automate zeta and/or particle size measurements as a function of pH. The MPT-3 autotitrator will help the group study new technologies to remediate inorganic contamination (heavy metals, fluorides, cyanides etc) of ground water and aid in their design and implementation.

The University of Wollongong, School of Earth and Environmental Sciences has installed their new desktop Phenom XL SEM that will allow researchers to zoom in on geological, environmental and archaeological materials with up to 100,000 times magnification (<14 nm resolution). The Phenom XL has a large sample stage, allowing users to analyse samples up to 10 cm x 10 cm in area and determine elemental composition using the fully integrated Energy Dispersive Spectrometer (EDS).

Macquarie University have installed their new superfast  bench-top Phenom XL Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM). The Phenom SEM will serve to assist researchers, students and industry with fast, high resolution imaging with elemental analysis of large samples up to 100mm x 100mm. The Backscatter detector yields sharp images together with chemical contrast information while the Secondary Electron Detector supports surface sensitive imaging.
