KSV-NIMA Langmuir and Langmuir-Blodgett troughs are used to create and characterise single molecule thick films and offer precision control over the lateral packing density of molecules. Monolayers can be transferred using a Langmuir-Blodgett (LB) deposition technique. This enables the creation of single and multi-layer films with precise control of thickness, molecular orientation and packing density.
Applications include studies of:
Conventional Langmuir Trough (LT)

Conventional LB deposition trough

High compression LT (ISR Trough)

The KSV NIMA LB software is very intuitive and easy to use. It allows the user to perform a variety of pre-programmed methods which can be modified further for particular needs.
Standard programs include:
The Interfacial Shear Rheometer (ISR) is a unique instrument that provides an accurate and quantitative method to measure the shear properties of fluid interfaces (gas/liquid or liquid/liquid). This is not possible with rotational rheometers as they lack the sensitivity to probe within a thickness of a few nanometers. The KSV NIMA ISR can be combined with a Langmuir trough, allowing measurements on both soluble and insoluble films. Applications include the examination of phase transitions, determination of thin film structure and emulsion stability.
Surface potential sensorThe KSV NIMA Surface potential sensor complements data obtained with the Langmuir Trough to determine monolayer composition, molecular orientation, and degree of molecular dissociation or molecular interactions at the interface. The non-contact and non-destructive vibrating plate capacitor method ensures very good accuracy and reproducibility while maintaining minimal drift.
Infrared Reflection SpectroscopyThe KSV NIMA PM-IRRAS provides a powerful method to assess the chemical orientation of molecules and chemical composition from interfacial films down to one molecule thick films. The innovative goniometric configuration allows easy angle adjustment and fast setup time. With an open design, integration with a Langmuir trough is simple. A wavenumber range of 800 – 4000cm-1 makes it ideally suited to analysis of mono and multilayers, lipid films, membrane proteins, nano particles and surfactants.
Brewster Angle MicroscopeNon invasive, real-time imaging of monolayer films can easily be performed using the KSV NIMA BAM or MicroBAM. This technique is useful for determining the homogeneity of compressed monolayer films, domain sizes, shapes, rigidity and packing behaviour. Brewster Angle Microscopes can be used in conjunction with a Langmuir Trough to examine films at various surface pressures. Applications include real-time monitoring of photochemical and polymerisation reactions, phase separation studies and the detection of surface active materials.
Dip CoatersKSV Dip Coaters provide ideal solutions for paints, coatings, smart surfaces, electronics or biomaterials. Applications include uniform films, layer-by-layer assemblies, sol-gel coatings and self-assembled monolayer’s.
KSV NIMA dip coaters range from compact instruments for coating of small samples in a single vessel to more complex systems enabling horizontal and vertical movement for multi-vessel operations and coating of large samples.
